OUR HISTORY

For more than fifty years, DEOMI has fostered military readiness through research, training, and consultation focused on leadership, teamwork, and unit cohesion. Evolving from its 1971 origin as the Defense Race Relations Institute to address racial tensions, DEOMI expanded its scope in 1979 to encompass all federally protected categories. Since the 1990s, the institute has leveraged human relations science to optimize leadership and team performance, providing evidence-based resources and certifying specialized MEO EEO practitioners who address harassment and discrimination. Designated as the DoW’s Center of Excellence for human relations, DEOMI now leads efforts in equal opportunity, harassment prevention, developing educational materials, and assessment tools while collaborating with various organizations to promote unity and shared purpose within the military and beyond.
